Fly Reels
There are two types of Fly Reels Click-and-Pawl and Disc
Drag systems.
Click-and-Pawl is a basic reel system. They are a bit
noisier than the disc drag but they are less expensive
and have fewer parts. When playing a fish you are
supposed to palm the reel- which means you place your
palm on the rim of the spool. This will allow you to
slow the reel down, in essence you are adding drag to
the the reel by doing so.
Disc Drag reels have a setting on the back of the reel
so you can apply more friction to the spool to slow it
down. Most systems include a piece of cork or a gear
that functions as the heart of the system.
You will find all types and prices on the market. You do
want to match your reel to your line weight, most reels
come in three sizes. If you plan on purchasing a reel
for Saltwater please make sure the reel and it's parts
are corrosion resistant. Another feature to keep in mind
is the ability to switch lines (example a Floating to a
sinking line)by purchasing additional spools. Or the
cartridge reels which have a plastic interchangeable
spool sandwiched between the face and the back of the
reel.
To protect your reel try polishing it with Carnauba wax
and always keep it's internal parts lubricated and dirt
free. Particles of dirt can run havoc on your disc drag
gear by wearing them down. Always make sure parts are
tightened since daily use can loosen screws and nuts.
