This new addition to the Griffin line of quality vises has been expertly designed for ease of operation and quickness of the cam lever hook release. The cam lever can be locked in a forward or backward position, allowing more clearance while tying. Ideal for pro tyers and beginners. The tempered steel jaws will firmly grip hooks ranging form 22-7/0's.

Tying Bench Review
Montana Pro II

The Montana Pro II vise is what I would consider an entry level tying vise. it is a very basic vise geared towards the beginner tyer or perhaps the occasional tyer. It is a step up from the clamp style vises that are so often included in tying kits.

Although this vise may not have any features such as rotary or an adjustable head,  it retails at just $88.95. Therefore if you want extras you have to pay for them! You may not want all the bells and whistles.

The jaws on this vise are what you would expect to find on models priced allot higher than the Montana Pro. The simple cam mechanism to lock down the hook is great but I would have liked to see a little sturdier design. The spring that applies tension to the jaw seems like it could fly off. The cam lever also feels a little questionable upon locking it down. Although upon locked we were unable to move a hook in the jaw when pressure was applied. The jaws simply had the hook holding power!

With that being said I don't feel as thou this vise would actually ever fall apart. The Base is very sturdy and suffice under tying conditions. The carrying case that is included makes this vise excellent for transport. This vise would also be ideal for tying Saltwater, deer hair, or jig patterns. The jaw is small enough thou to accept smaller hook sizes.

Final Thoughts: This vise is perfect for the beginner tyer or occasional tyer. We felt the height of this vise was comfortable, and it was well packaged and the instructions were informative. If you are looking for a vise with a versatile jaw but want a simple design and want to spend under a hundred dollars. The Montana Pro II vise meets the criteria! I don't think you could find a better pedestal vise with the quality of these jaws for this price.
