We tested the Redington Classic Trout Fly Rod Model CT 9064 which is the largest rod in size and weight for this product line. It took a couple of casts to adjust to the moderate “classic” action this rod has, majority of the rods that I use have a fast to medium fast action. Once I had adjusted to the action of the rod I absolutely loved it! The “classic” action which this rod is known for is extremely forgiving. It allowed a very delicate presentation on every cast, and allowed you to feel the line load. I found my casts to be accurate, with tight loops, and allowed the line, leader and fly to land ever so delicately.

We fished this rod in several different conditions and found the Redington Classic Trout Rod to outshine. In wind conditions since you can feel the rod load due to the action it made it a breeze (no pun intended!). It was perfect in conditions where the water was calm and the trout were spooked. It allowed me to pinpoint my cast to rising trout without ever interrupting their feeding frenzy. Perhaps Redington should have named this ‘The Stealth Series’.

We also put this rod into the hands of a beginner and they loved the ability to feel the rod load upon their backcast. They also reported they had no wind knots or hang-ups in their leader. I figure this is due to the action of the rod and the ability for tighter more precise loops being formed.

The rod we tested is a four piece rod we loved the fact that each section had dots to allow ease in aligning the rod. Not all multiple sectioned rods have this feature.

We were also impressed with the fact that this rod did not feel stiff with all the extra joints. It had enough backbone to fight decent sized trout. The tip is delicate enough to protect the very light tippets we were using. It allowed you to feel the take which resulted in more hookups. I cant think of another rod I would want to use nymphing a river or stream.

This rod reminded me of Sage’s Light Line Series but of course at a huge discount of about $300. The Redington Classic Trout series could easily be selling for a lot more money. I have fished rods from all makes and price ranges and this rod is a fantastic trout rod for rivers, streams, and ponds. We found this rod to be of high quality and exceeded our expectations, hats off to Redington!

Construction

We checked the spine on every section of this rod to see if they were properly aligned, they were. The spine process is something that some manufactures skip in the building process, not a lot of times but it does happen. The spine of a rod is considered the backbone of the rod. It can be found by resting the butt end of the rod on a solid flat surface. Next, elevate the tip about 45º and hold it lightly in the palm of your hand. With the other hand, depress the middle of the rod section while rolling it slowly away from you. You will quickly feel a point of resistance where it becomes hard to roll and physically, jumps to another position. That’s the spine! If it is not properly spined it will cause the line to cast to the left or right, never straight.

The finish of the rod is a beautiful classic brown with a Rose Dynawood insert and an aluminum uplocking reel seat. We were surprised by the smooth high quality Portuguese cork grip, usually not found on rods in this price range. The stripping guides are titanium oxide which is known for strength and durability.

We also like the fact the guides and winding check section were not heavily built up with finish epoxy. Too much can add to the weight of the rod, we found this rod to be light and comfortable.

The rod comes with a Cordura rod tube and sock, and comes with a lifetime original owner guarantee.
