RIO’s
latest
Trout LT
fly line has been designed for the ultimate in
performance for traditional trout fly fishing
techniques. A long, delicate front taper ensures
the softest of presentations, making the line
perfect for fishing dry flies, soft hackles,
emergers, small nymphs and chironomids, while an
extended body gives the line stability at range
and makes mending and roll casting easy. The
weight distribution helps load a fly rod when
fishing at short range or on smaller rivers and
creeks, though it is manufactured precisely to
the AFTMA standard and is ideal for all but the
fastest of fly rods. The
Trout LT
is created with a supple braided multifilament
core and features an extremely soft, memory-free
AgentX coating which makes these high floating
lines incredibly easy to lift quietly off the
water and ensures that they are totally memory
free. RIO XS Technology results in a very smooth
and slick, dirt repelling finish, while the
Super Floatation Technology ensures that the
line tip doesn’t sink. All lines have a welded
loop on each end except on the DT lines where
delicacy is of the utmost importance. The unique
profile of the double taper easily transfers
energy to the tip and, with the longest tapers
of all, is the ultimate presentation fly line.
On The Water Review
Line tested Trout LT WF5F Beige/Sage
The Rio Trout LT was a pleasure to cast
the first thing we noticed was how slick the
line actually was. This is due to Rio's new XS
(Extreme Slickness) technology. We tested this
line on numerous outings and never cleaned the
line and every time we used it never sank once.
The tip of the fly line floated every time also
due to the fact that the Trout LT line
incorporates welded loops on each end. This
makes it easier and quicker to change leaders
especially if you are changing leaders
frequently due to fishing conditions and
environments. You may need 12'+ leader one day
fishing Stillwater and a 9' for nymphing a river
the next. We also think the fact that the welded
loops totally seal the inner core of the fly
line this helps in keeping the line from
sinking.
The line was easy to mend and we experienced no
memory at all. The line was very easy to cast in
all weather conditions, wind and all. Roll
casting was simple and noticed that the line was
easy to load when only a small amount was out
from the rod tip. The dual tone this line
features marks the sweet spot of a fly line by
providing an obvious color change in the line
and giving anglers a reference point of where a
particular line loads their rod and how much
line to strip in before making a cast. With the
DualTone system it is easy to see how much to
strip in, where to pick up a cast, how much line
to hold in the air when false casting and when
to make the final cast. I was skeptical at first
of this feature but found it to be very helpful.
Overall this fly line impressed us and we
definitely recommend this line for slow to
medium action rods. We feel that this line is
the perfect marriage for rods of that action. We
found the line to be slick, easy to mend and
cast. The DualTone system makes finding the
sweet spot of the fly line elementary.
