Based in Sun Valley, Idaho,
Smith Optics,
Inc. was founded in 1965 with the creation of
the first-ever goggle featuring a sealed thermal
lens and breathable vent foam. In the early
years, founder Dr. Bob Smith, an orthodontist by
trade, made goggles by hand using dental tools,
foam and glue. Before he struck a deal for
manufacturing of Smith goggles in the late 60's,
Smith would often trade his creations for lift
tickets. These early prototypes were usually
manufactured by Smith and friends around the
kitchen table.
Today,
Smith Optics
has become synonymous with innovative, durable,
top-quality products in the eyewear and goggle
market. The company is also recognized for its
unparalleled team roster, which boasts some of
the top names in biking, motocross, skiing,
snowboarding, surfing, skateboarding and
wakeboarding. Like many other companies, Smith
utilizes team input as a key element of new
product introductions. In addition, however,
Smith athletes are actively involved in the
development process for performance testing and
coloration selection.
The corporate headquarters are in Ketchum,
Idaho, but
Smith Optics
has hubs across the globe. The European
headquarters are located in Florence, Italy; a
promotions office is in Hossegor, France, near
Biarritz; and San Clemente, Calif. is the center
of Smith's surf and MotorSports operations.

50 countries through specialty and sporting

Technology
Polarized Defense
Glare off of reflective surfaces decreases depth
perception, reduces visual acuity, and causes
eye fatigue. Smith Optics Polarized eyewear uses
the highest quality polarized film in the world
to filter out 99.9% of this visual static for
maximum glare-free comfort. Exactingly
pre-shaped in the manufacturing process and
precisely aligned in the lenses, Smith polarized
film is precisely aligned and pre-shaped in the
manufacturing process so that it perfectly
matches the curvature of our lenses when
installed. Each Smith Optics Polarized lens is
in fact two thin wafers of either Techlite glass
or Carbonic lens material between which this
high-grade polarized film is fitted, protecting
it from the elements and ensuring distortion
free polarization.
Polarchromic
Smith Optics Polarchromic lens technology
combines the benefits of glare obliterating
polarization with the advantage of photochromic
light sensitivity. Available in either Carbonic
or Techlite glass, Smith Optics Polarchromic
lenses automatically self-adjust their tint in
response to ambient UV light conditions creating
a tint level which is perfect at all hours of
the day. These lenses retain their photochromic
properties indefinitely, certainly outliving the
life of the frame itself. Spanning a range of
approximately 10%-35% VLT (Visible Light
Transmission) Polarchromic lenses need only
10-25 seconds to fully transform from light to
dark depending on UV light intensity. The result
is a lens tint which is perfect at every moment
of the day from dawn to dusk particularly at
hours when the benefits of polarized are vital
but the lens tint has to be light enough to see.
